How to open rar files in Ubuntu (Jaunty Jackalope): Install rar!

WinRAR-256_32 Rar has become a very important compression standard. Sadly it’s closed to be used with default decompression utility in Ubuntu (Jaunty Jackalope). However, you can install the rar utility for the default archive manager to start opening rar files in ubuntu.

.rar extension files can be opened using winrar on Windows.

Here’s how you can do this:

1. Open the terminal window. To do this hit ALT+F2 to bring the run command and type “gnome-terminal” without quotes to bring the terminal window.

2. On the terminal window type “sudo apt-get rar” (without quotes) and hit enter.

installrar

3. Enter your password and hit enter to install rar.

installrar1

You won’t have problems opening the rar files using your archive manager anymore.

I note that split RAR archives, i.e., myfile.part1.rar, myfile.part2.rar, etc. do not open properly. Is there a trick to this?

For Ubuntu 9.10, in step 2. use command just like is on that picture “sudo apt-get install rar”.

You can install it (for Ubuntu 9.10) by going to Applications–> Ubuntu Software Centre –> Click on “Get Free Software” on left panel –> click on “Accessories” on right panel — find “rar” in the list and click the arrow to install the easy easy way — easier than any installation on any os I’ve ever done.

Hi thank you for this tutorial but i am beginner so when i type sudo apt-get install rar
it shows :

Reading package lists … DONE
Building dependency tree
Reading state information … Done
Package rar is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package rar has no installation candidate
