WinRAR-256_32Rar has become a very important compression standard. Sadly it’s closed to be used with default decompression utility in Ubuntu (Jaunty Jackalope). However, you can install the rar utility for the default archive manager to start opening rar files in ubuntu.

.rar extension files can be opened using winrar on Windows.

Here’s how you can do this:

1. Open the terminal window. To do this hit ALT+F2 to bring the run command and type “gnome-terminal” without quotes to bring the terminal window.

terminalrun

2. On the terminal window type “sudo apt-get rar” (without quotes) and hit enter.

installrar

3. Enter your password and hit enter to install rar.

installrar1

You won’t have problems opening the rar files using your archive manager anymore.
