Install 7Zip or p7zip on Ubuntu
Other day I downloaded a .7z file and I assumed that the file will be opened out of the blue with my archive manager. Apparently I was wrong and realized that I cannot open the .7z file. So I decided to install 7zip on my Ubuntu machine. The package for Linux is called as p7zip. You can install it using synaptic, however there’s a new version which is available and we’ll install the new version. Let’s see how to install p7zip alpha on your Jaunty machine:
1. Download p7zip alpha deb (p7zip_9.04~dfsg.1-1_i386.deb) from the following page:
http://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/p7zip/download
2. Double click the download p7zip_9.04~dfsg.1-1_i386.deb file to begin the installation

Now you should be able to open the .7z files on your Ubuntu machine.
