VLCUndoubtedly according to me the best media player that I can think of on any platform is VLC player hands down and that’s the precise reason I have it installed on Ubuntu 10.04, Windows 7 and now on OpenSuse 11.2. Sometime back we covered how to install VLC player on Ubuntu using PPA. Today, we are going to see how to install it on OpenSuse and make it the default player to play mp3 and other media files.

In order to install VLC player on OpenSuse 11.2 we’ll have to add it’s repositories to the software repository of OpenSuse. To do so, go to Computer > YaST

YaST control center

YaST control center

At the YaST Control Center, select Software.

Cclick Software Repositories tobring up the Configured Software Repositories Window

Click Add and add the following :

Respository Name: VLC

URL: http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/11.2

Click Next and you will see that VLC repository is now added.

Click on Refresh, you’ll be prompted to add the GPG key.

Click Import and click close.

Go to Computer > Install Software

Install software opensuse

Make sure the Available tab is selected and in the search box type VLC. Select the package as shown in the screenshot below:

Click Install and click Apply.

This should install VLC player on your OpenSuse 11.2. In order to start using VLC player, bring up the run prompt (ALT+F2) and type “vlc” (without quotes).

In order to make VLC as your default player for mp3s. Right click any of the mp3 files and click properties. Go to the tab that reads “Open with” and select VLC player. This will ensure that all your mp3s are played in VLC in future. You can also do this to other media types.
