We all love the infamous cube in Linux. Actually to be frank this is what drove me to start using Linux. Today we are going to see how to install Nvidia graphic drivers in OpenSuse 11.2 and then enable the desktop effects to get the infamous 3D cube.

Install Nvidia graphic drivers in OpenSuse 11.2 with Gnome Desktop

1. Go to Computer > Yast

At the YaST Control Center, select Software.

Cclick Software Repositories tobring up the Configured Software Repositories Window

Click Add and add the following :

Respository Name: Nvidia

URL: http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.2/

Click Next and you will see that Nvidia repository is now added.

Click on Refresh, you’ll be prompted to add the GPG key.

Click Import and click close.

Go to Computer > Install Software

Make sure the Available tab is selected and in the search box type Nvidia. Select the 2 packages as shown in the screenshot below:

Click Install and click Apply.

Once the installation is done, reboot your machine.

Enable Desktop Effect in OpenSuse 11.2 Gnome desktop

In order to enable the desktop effect in OpenSuse go to Computer > Control Center

Click Desktop Effect

Now Click Enable Desktop Effect.

You can also choose the profile. I chose Ultimate. You’ll be prompted to keep the new settings. Click Yes and log out and login to see the new effects.

Play around with the settings to explore new things. We will try to cover configuring compiz fusion in OpenSuse 11.2 soon.
