Strangely, my Ubuntu machine doesn’t resolve nameservers fast enough when I am connected to my ADSL wifi connection. This doesn’t happen on my Windows 7 machine. So, I decided to change my DNS servers to OpenDNS. And I found significant improvement.

OpenDNS is the leading provider of free security and infrastructure services that make the Internet safer through integrated Web content filtering, anti-phishing and DNS. OpenDNS services enable consumers and network administrators to secure their networks from online threats, reduce costs and enforce Internet-use policies. OpenDNS is used today by millions of users and organizations around the world.

Following is how you change your DNS to OpenDNS servers.

1. Right click on the network icon in Ubuntu (On the right side of top panel) and click Edit connections..

Select the relevant tab. In my case because I am using the Wireless connection, I selected the Wireless tab.

Select the connection you want to use with OpenDNS and click Edit and in the subsequent window select the IPv4 Settings.

In the method drop down select Automatic (DHCP) addresses only.

In the DNS Servers field add the following IP addresses.

208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

Click Apply and you should be done. Hope this makes you browsing experience much faster and secure at the same time.
