Docky is a branched out application from Gnome-Do and has turned into a full fledged dock application for Linux.

Docky is a frontend for GNOME Do (Do) that introduces an entirely new way to interact with Do. Docky helps Do become more directly involved with your desktop by providing a persistent mouse based Dock interface while remaining true to Do’s keyboard only interaction. Being tied directly into Do allows Docky to be adaptive and dynamic. As your usage patterns change, so too does Docky. For everything Do can do, Docky can too.

Following are some of the features of Docky:

Drag and Drop items onto the Dock (files, folders, and applications from the menu)

Drag and Drop remove items from the dock

Drag and Drop items into folders on the dock, as well as the trash can.

Drag and Drop reordering of items on the dock

Image previews of items which support it

True parabolic zoom (can be disabled)

Click animations

Intuitive resizing by dragging on the dock separator

Adding and removing “Statistical Items” (items which Do considers relevant to you) from the dock by dragging the left and right edges

Window indicators (supports advanced window indicators)

Advanced window management features via the Window Manager plugin for GNOME Do

The ability to make Docky Automatically Hide when not being hovered. Often referred to as autohide.

A full frontend to GNOME Do

Add items to docky from GNOME Do searches

Installing Docky on Linux Mint 9 is pretty simple and straight forward. We can do this using the PPA. Type the following in a terminal window

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:docky-core/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install docky

This will install Docky on your machine. Once installed you can find it under Menu > Accessories > Docky. By default it’s also added to your default startup applications.

Enjoy and flaunt the new docky!

Installing Skype using deb file on Linux Mint is the way most of us have used. However, this doesn’t ensure an automatic update of skype as and when there is a new version released. Which makes it tedious to update it all the time. However, using the repositories we can ensure that whenever there is a new release skype is updated directly using the update manager in Linux Mint. Let’s see how to install Skype on Linux Mint 9 {Isadora} using repositories.

1. First let’s add gpg keys. To do so start a terminal window and copy paste the following command:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys 0xd66b746e

2. Open Software sources by going to Menu > Administration > Software Sources.

3. Go to the tab that reads “Other software” and click Add.

4. Add the following line:

deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free

5. Click close and you will be prompted to reload the package manager.

6. Open the terminal window and type the following command to install Skype

sudo apt-get install skype

This should install Skype on your machine. You can start using it by going to Menu > Internet > Skype.

Enjoy talking to your friends!

There are various screenshot utilities for Linux, but my favorite is Ksnapshot and because I am a big fan of Gnome and don’t use much of KDE, I don’t get this lovely application installed by default in Linux Mint. So, I have to install it manually. Following is a simple step to install KSnapshot on Linux Mint 9 code named Isadora.

1. Open a terminal window by hitting ALT+F2 and type “gnome-terminal”. In the terminal type the following command:

sudo apt-get install ksnapshot

Depending on your connection speed, Ksnapshot will be installed. It will appear under Menu > Graphics > Ksnapshot.

Enjoy using Ksnapshot!

LinuxHub has seen a great support from all it’s readers and is enhancing the scope of it’s coverage by bringing Linux Mint under it’s umbrella. As we have been covering news and how-to’s related to Ubuntu and OpenSuse, we plan to cover the same topics for Linux Mint. We however, will not compromise on the content related to other distros.

We believe that this will enrich your experience with LinuxHub. As a surprise we might have a dedicated writer for posts related to Linux Mint and hence not reducing the number of posts related to Ubuntu and OpenSuse. We are very e,xcited to have the freshness of Mint here at LinuxHub. Linux Mint 9 (Isadora is almost here), so we might start of with Isadora.
