Sadly it&#8217;s closed to be used with default decompression utility in Ubuntu (Jaunty Jackalope). However, you can install the rar utility for the default archive manager to start opening rar files in ubuntu.</p>
<blockquote><p>.rar extension files can be opened using <a href="http://rarlabs.com" target="_blank">winrar</a> on Windows.</p></blockquote>
<p>Here&#8217;s how you can do this:</p>
<p>1. Open the terminal window. To do this hit ALT+F2 to bring the run command and type &#8220;gnome-terminal&#8221; without quotes to bring the terminal window.</p>
<p><img class="size-full wp-image-43 alignnone" title="terminalrun" src="http://linuxhub.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/terminalrun.png" alt="terminalrun" width="452" height="218" /></p>
<p>2. On the terminal window type &#8220;sudo apt-get rar&#8221; (without quotes) and hit enter.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-45" title="installrar" src="http://linuxhub.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/installrar.png" alt="installrar" width="497" height="375" /></p>
<p>3. Enter your password and hit enter to install rar.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-46" title="installrar1" src="http://linuxhub.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/installrar1.png" alt="installrar1" width="497" height="375" /></p>
<p>You won&#8217;t have problems opening the rar files using your archive manager anymore.</p>
